A tragic train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's flagship government projects.
The accident occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link developed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.
“We are going to meticulously determine the reasons behind this tragedy,” affirmed the national leader.
The leader reported that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The leader added plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those involved.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the previous administration, whose time in office concluded the previous year. This rail line was closely associated with his leadership's strategic goals for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious railway undertaking from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economic fortunes of a relatively poorer part of the country.
Building Management and Safety Concerns
The construction of both train projects was managed by the nation's military, marking a notable growth of its responsibilities in public works. They were completed at an fast-tracked rate, surpassing forecasts to be partially opened before the end of that presidency.
However, this rushed timetable had also raised significant apprehensions over safety standards.
- Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This encompasses an prior collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-deadly derailments.
Appeals for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the disaster, the head of a key rival party called for an urgent pause in the development and management of all such projects.
This halt was proposed pending a thorough safety audit. The party declared that the loss of life "requires immediate answers."
In reply, the national leader asserted that the train had been functioning in complete adherence to all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the development and operation of these vital undertakings.
