Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Comments

England opener Zak Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of statements from captain Stokes about the dressing room as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder delivered this message in several interviews following his team's defeat in the second match of the Ashes series against Australia previously.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where the visitors now face a series loss with a match to spare, the captain noted he had allowed his message to "circulate freely" among the squad.

"I have completed all the talking over the past two days that I needed to have done," said Stokes.

But, after the opener made a knock of 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the media with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

Stokes made the "fragile individuals" comment after England were beaten in Brisbane to go two matches behind.

The team subsequently went on a break to Noosa in the gap between the second and third Tests.

Before the Adelaide contest, he said his players had held "raw" conversations and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to remain in contention in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, Crawley asserted the guidance from the captain and head coach Brendon McCullum had remained in line with their previous three years in charge.

"It's been extremely upbeat, the same as always," noted the opener. "It's on maintaining positivity, play our way, with lots of freedom. It felt like we were capable of an extraordinary feat entering this game."

The Hosts On the Verge of Rapid Series Victory

The opener's dismissal on day four came during a crucial three-wicket burst by Australian spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Harry Brook and Stokes himself – meant the chasing side 207-6 chasing a notional target of 435.

Consequently, Australia require four wickets on the final day to move to an insurmountable 3-0 lead with three Tests.

A loss will extend the English team's winless run in this country to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth successive away Ashes series defeat.

This series will be completed in just 11 days of play – with England fell the initial matches in two and four days respectively.

Not since 1921, when the Australians completed a series win in England in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been determined more swiftly. Australia have also won in eleven days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"It's disappointing," said Crawley. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel at this point."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we'll certainly approach it like that," he continued.

"It's been tough. They're a very, very good team. It was always going to be hard touring here to face them. They were the favourites and have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

Although Crawley's innings in Adelaide likely secures questions about his short-term future in the England team, Ollie Pope looks under threat for his position in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

Pope fell for 17 runs in the team's second innings on day four, adding to his modest returns versus Australia.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has never made a half-century and averages just 17.62.

A solitary other England player in over a century – Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top order in the Ashes and recorded a lower average.

However, Crawley said any suggestion Pope is under the microscope originates with "the media" – meaning the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," said he. "He has had a good year if I'm honest."

"He has produced several excellent innings. It is talk externally. There's no chat of that nature on Ollie amongst the players," he concluded.
