Presence
Soderbergh pushes his film-making abilities with this clever supernatural story shot entirely from the viewpoint of the phantom. When a household with Lucy Liu as Rebekah plus Callina Liang as Chloe settles into their recent residence, the camera – representing the ghost – shadows their actions. Chloe seems sensing the poltergeist, and it seems protective of her. Yet what is the reason? The premise is enjoyable that remains concise, with a twist that could catch you off guard. Saturday 11 October, 4.35pm, 10.10pm, Sky Cinema
Nicolas Cage's Meta Comedy
Nicolas Cage embraces his cult stardom through this meta comedy caper. He plays a self-obsessed celebrity playing himself who agrees to a $1m payday to appear at a celebration at a Mediterranean location for billionaire superfan Javi. Hired by the CIA to gather intel on the alleged criminal, Cage's “nouveau shamanic acting ability” is put to the test. This Saturday, evening, on Channel 4
The Black Phone
The director's contained scarefest stands strong even without a continuation. Set in 1978 Denver, multiple kidnappings has rendered the youth frightened. After Finney is kidnapped by the kidnapper and held captive in a cellar, he dreads the worst. But the disconnected phone on the wall keeps ringing, with ghostly voices providing assistance, as the intuitive nightmares from his sibling Gwen might rescue him. A solid creepfest. Saturday 11 October, nighttime, on Film4
The Eyes of Tammy Faye
In the struggle between spirituality and money, it's a knockout win for materialism in this director's brilliantly over-the-top biopic of the disgraced televangelist and her felon spouse. Garfield plays the corrupt Bakker, who declares early on, “God does not want us to be poor,”. The couple begin capitalizing on the American public's religious faith. It's a riot of poor styling, bad makeup and hypocrisy, though Chastain achieves to show the real-life figure as a sympathetic figure. Next Tuesday, late night, on Film4
The Spy Mystery
This period's another release from Steven Soderbergh delivers a espionage tale as tight similar to the collars sported by Michael Fassbender's intelligence officer. He receives a mission to discover a traitor within their ranks out of five possibilities – one of whom is his spouse. Both actors are experts of deadpan cool, so a delicious mind game of truth or lie unfolds. Tom Burke, Regé-Jean Page, Naomie Harris and Marisa Abela join in the smart espionage amusement. Friday 17 October, various showings, Sky Cinema
