A defense official has stated that the Ministry of Defence is currently looking into the possible security risks associated with Chinese-made vehicles, and staff have been instructed to avoid talking about secret information in all vehicles.
Safety Advice for Defence Staff
During a recently aired interview on a radio station, a defence minister commented on reports that MoD staff have been instructed not to discuss classified material while travelling in China-made cars.
He stated that the ministry is “looking into” cars from China within its vehicle pools, but emphasised that safety is a issue in every modern cars.
We have a fleet of tens of thousands of cars in the MoD and those vehicles account for a tiny fraction.
But regardless of if you’re traveling in a vehicle from China or a car from another country, our instruction to our staff is not to plug MoD technology into their car, not to have conversations at a classified level in any kind of car, due to the growing threats of eavesdropping that are present in every single vehicle, to only have those secret talks in secure locations. This is a wise and sensible thing for everyone worried about safety.
When it was put to him that it would be wise for the MoD to stop using all Chinese vehicles, Pollard responded: That is precisely what we’re investigating at the present time.”
Broader Defence Context
This announcement follows reports from Scandinavian countries have warned the United Kingdom to the existence of multi-purpose shutdown mechanisms in Chinese buses, which could allow China to disable public transport and bring chaos to public transit.
Furthermore, a Russia intelligence vessel was reportedly shining lasers at Royal Air Force pilots, described as a “extremely risky” action by government representatives.
The broader security situation underscores the significance of strong protocols and caution in all areas of government activities, including vehicle usage to communication habits.
