Nepal's Political Landscape Witnesses Major Partnership Forged By Media Personality and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a notable move ahead of next year's national polls, two high-profile figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance emerges in the wake of large-scale and fatal young people's protests that shook the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the ouster of the incumbent government.

A Pledge to Tackle Young People's Concerns

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially pledged to focus on the issues raised by the younger generation. This commitment follows the turbulent anti-corruption unrest that occurred in September, which led to considerable casualties.

"Consensus must not be what a leader wants, it must be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane following the agreement was signed.

The September uprising was sparked by public frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a spark for deeper resentment stemming from years of economic stagnation and persistent allegations of deep-rooted political corruption.

Details of the New Electoral Agreement

According to the official pact, the roles for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread public dissatisfaction with the country's older political leadership. He has previously served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central figure in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He played a role in setting up the caretaker government that came to power after the ousted administration was dissolved.

Broader Political Consultations Underway

In a related development, the sitting interim prime minister recently held consultations with a number of leading political leaders. These discussions included ex- prime ministers and the presidents of rival mainstream parties, marking the first such dialogue since the period of the uprising.

After these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to state that holding a credible election is a collective duty. The message affirmed the government's commitment to ensuring a safe and open environment for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
